Nutrition

How are you fueling your body? Everyone knows we should eat healthy, but what does that really mean? Food is fuel for the body and is imperative for its functioning.  When we fill the body with processed, fake, genetically modified food we cannot digest it properly and get very little actual nutrition.
This causes toxicity in the body and does not allow it to function as it should. We need to ensure that we consume the nutrients our body needs for proper function and regeneration.

Function

The least known and arguably the most important piece, a properly functioning nervous system.  You have a nerve going to almost every single cell in your entire body telling that cell how to function. So what if the messages traveling through those nerves have interference? The targets of those messages will not get the correct information, and they will begin to function improperly. In short, those cells and your body will begin to break down and degenerate.  Proper communication between the brain and body is imperative for proper health.

Structure

Your spine, ligaments, tendons, muscles and rest of your skeleton make up the most palpable system of our body. This is the part we knowingly use everyday and feel everyday. Aches and pains live here and throughout the years instability and degeneration can occur. We take special care to both stabilize and rebuild this system to decrease the amount of internal stress on your body so that you can begin feeling better and doing the things you love to do. Unfortunately in almost every case, focusing on this system alone is not enough. That is why we focus on the areas below, as we seek to rebuild the system not just cover up the symptoms.

Movement

Movement is life!  When we stop moving, we start degenerating, and there are volumes of research supporting this.  Not only do our organ systems, digestive and cardiac systems especially, start to have almost immediate devastating reactions but our spines begin to degenerate at an accelerated pace, putting our health in much greater jeopardy. Due to the recent changes in our lifestyles we have almost forgotten how to use our most basic of muscles which has lead to many of our aches and pains.

As an active child, Dr. Tonnies suffered from allergies, which eventually developed into asthma. This affected his childhood in a negative way.  Despite having these health issues, he refused to stop playing sports, and instead began to understand that exercise and sleep are vital components to health, as well as life in general.   Just as most do, he ignored his body’s warning signs of declining health. As he grew older he suffered from multiple bouts of strep throat, at its worst, having strep on five occasions within a three-month period.  After failing to find the medical answer to why his health was failing, he began searching for a more natural form of healthcare.  It wasn’t until his high school psychology class, that his thinking began to transform, after learning about the brain and nervous system. This led to a never-ending desire to better understand the nervous system and how it relates to our health.

Dr. Tonnies’ education began at St. Louis University High School, where after graduating, he was accepted into Truman State University where he earned a bachelor’s degree in Psychology with a minor in Biology.  This is where his interest in health was ignited.  His interest centered on the brain and nervous system and its control of everything that occurs in our body. Further compelled, he continued his education in natural health by earning a doctoral degree at Logan College of Chiropractic, from which he matriculated in December 2011. While attending Chiropractic school, Dr. Josh Tonnies studied the anatomy and physiology of the human body and how it was created to maintain itself.  Though loving his new studies, something was missing.  He was learning about how the body worked and how to assess the spine, but he never really understood the “why” in Chiropractic, until he was introduced to Upper Cervical care. After noticing multiple changes within himself following his first upper cervical adjustment and with a more complete understanding of the philosophy of Chiropractic, Dr. Tonnies decided to become an Upper Cervical Chiropractor.

Now Dr. Tonnies’ desire is to share his passion, by educating families of the St. Louis community about the importance of a healthy lifestyle and the amazing benefits of Upper Cervical care. Dr. Josh Tonnies’ desire to serve the St. Louis community is evident through his past work at Giant Steps, school for autistic children, St. Patrick’s Center, Habitat for Humanity and various other volunteering events.  His future aspirations include, opening a donation-based clinic in the city of St. Louis to aid those who cannot afford any type of healthcare, and to participate in many overseas mission trips, eventually opening a donation based clinic overseas. For the first 3 years after graduating, Dr. Tonnies was part of the team of physicians at the Atlas Institute of Health and is proud to have been part of their vision.  Recently, Dr. Tonnies has help to expand the reach of Upper Cervical care by opening his new office, St. Louis Upper Cervical in Webster Groves.  His hopes are that it will attract and educate even more about the power of Upper Cervical Chiropractic.
